Mrs. Scritchfield (second row, fourth from the left) was the artist’s favorite teacher of her youth. She had two thumbs on her right hand, one tiny one growing from the side of a normal thumb. These days a child wouldn’t leave the hospital with that extra appendage, but Mrs. Scritchfield was born in the 1890s. To the artist, who back then stuttered so badly she could barely speak, she is remembered as very kind. She retired before the year was out.
The artist is third from the left, second row from the bottom.
