When I was in Kenya many years ago, all the elephants I met were burnt sienna because they were slathered in Kenyan dirt and it was iron-rich red. The dirt in the Maryland Zoo is more yellow ochre. Anna was bathed in it.
Anna was forty years old when I met her in Baltimore. She’s a handsome elephant, weighing four tons and standing 9-feet-tall at her shoulder. It was standing close to Anna that I finally saw how hairy elephants actually are. They are not furry but they are covered with hair. It’s pretty invisible and really shows best when back-lit. Anna’s eyelashes were undeniably long. Three to four inches long. It helped to be six feet away when I noticed these things.
Her oil portrait is 48 x 48, oil on canvas panel.
