Kinali was an exuberant, playful, still young 5-year-old Sumatran orangutan I met in 2016 at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita. Since his mother Daisy displayed little interest in motherhood, he was largely raised by his paternal grandmother and by his father Panji. His grandmother had passed on by the time I met him and his father fulfilled the role of playmate to his very active son.
These portraits are 11×14, oil on canvas board. I painted most of them in the winter and spring of 2018/19 because I needed to sit to work. A slow-healing foot injury had me off my feet.
