Marlon (Western Lowland Gorilla)
All the Animalia paintings in the SALE shop are from 2013 or 2014, my first years painting endangered species. Beginning in 2015, I would meet every animal I painted, and subtle differences ensued. More than any other reason, that’s why these paintings are on sale. I no longer show them with post-2015 work.
That said, this was the alpha male in the family group of Western Lowland Gorillas at the Bronx Zoo. Still, he predates my choice to meet the animals I paint. I named him Marlon. I’m sure he has a different name at the zoo. He sat with his back against the glass wall through which we looked, watching his family. I got this reference pic when he was walking back towards the glass, head down, fleetingly checking us out with quick glances under his brow. He was chowing down on kale. Although it’s hard to see in this image, the knuckles of his left hand hit the ground at the bottom.
